He was unanimously elected as DVC during the University Senate meeting held on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

Also at the meeting, Professor Charles Olufemi Adekoya was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, for the next two years. A Professor of International Human Rights Law and Clinical Legal Education, Adekoya was the Dean, Faculty of Law until his emergence.

He succeeds Professor (Mrs) Ebunoluwa Olufemi Oduwole whose tenure ended in August, after successfully serving for two consecutive terms of four years.

Senate re-elects Agboola, as Dean of Law becomes DVC Admin. The new appointments are to be ratified by the Governing Council of the University at its next sitting.

The newly re-elected Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB.Ch.B) of the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), a Master Degree in Oncology and a Doctorate Degree in Molecular Pathology, both of the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Prof. Agboola joined the services of the University as Lecturer II in the Department of Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology after a mandatory year of housemanship in 2001.
After passing through the ranks in the University, he rose to the position of a Professor in 2016.

He has served in various Committees of Senate, Joint Committee of Senate and Council of the University. He has equally served as Director of Linkages, Research and Advancement, 2017 – 2018 and Head of Department, Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology at different times from 2002 to 2018.

Agboola was the immediate past Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OOU Branch, 2014 – 2018; and Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Chapter, 2004 – 2006.

He was External Examiner to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria for Post Graduate Degrees (MSc and PhD) from 2018 till date and Editor-in-chief of University based Journals -AJSN, Agogo IJESS- from 2018 till date.

He was elected as Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and was to resume on Wednesday, 1st August, 2018 before he was first elected by the University Senate as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic for a period of two years.
Agboola, who has been a member of OOU Governing Council from 2018 till date, was member of Visitation Panel to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in 2018.

He was recently appointed as member of Board of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu and has also been member of West African Division of International Academy of Pathology (WADIAP) from 2018 till date.

The distinguished academic has attended and presented papers at local and international Conferences. He is well published in reputable international and local Journals with over 50 publications to his credit.

On his part, the new DVC, Administration, who was born on 20th April, 1964 in Okitipupa, Ondo State, joined the services of the University on 20th July, 2001 as Lecturer II.

With dint of hard work, dedication and commitment, he rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2016.

Adekoya completed his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. Degree) from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) Ago-Iwoye with a Second Class Lower Degree in 1989.

In 1990, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos for his Barrister-at-Law. He had his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Lagos, Akoka in 1998 and bagged his Ph.D in Law from University of Ghent, Belgium in 2008.

At various times, he has worked in law firms and corporate organisations in Nigeria, including occupying the position of Company Secretary/Legal Adviser at Home Foundation Savings and Loans Limited, Ikeja, Lagos before joining the academia.

Adekoya has also served the University in many capacities such as Assistant Coordinator (Academic), Diploma in Law Programme, 2002-2005; Sub-Dean, Postgraduate, 2009-2014; Ag. Head, Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, 2014-2018; and representative of the Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, Centre for Continuing Education Staff Disciplinary Committee.

He was also Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Postgraduate School Committee on Academic Integrity; member, Staff Professional Ethics and Discipline Committee (SPEDC); member Special Security Committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor in 2010; member, Examinations and Time Table Committee of the Postgraduate School; and member of the Students Disciplinary Committee (as faculty Representative).

Prof. Adekoya has been a member of the OOU Governing Council since 2017 till date and he is equally a member of the Committee of Council on Labour Relations.

His research interests are human rights – poverty and deprivations, access to justice, legal empowerment, public interest lawyering, rights to property, human security; clinical legal education, mediation and conciliation and research methodology.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC, Nigeria), the distinguished scholar served meritoriously as Examiner in Business Law for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) for five years.

In 2012, Prof. Adekoya was a member of the Curriculum Review Committee that carried out a total overhaul of the 2006 Clinical Legal Education Curriculum for Law Faculties/Law School Clinics in Nigeria, put in place by the Network of University Legal Aid Institution (NULA) Clinical Education.

As a result of his expertise in clinical legal education, Prof. Adekoya was appointed as a resource person in 2018 by Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI, Nigeria), a non-governmental organisation which pioneered the introduction and propagation of clinical legal education in Nigerian Faculties of Law.

The new DVC Administration has served as External Examiner to Departments and Faculties of Law in overseas and Nigerian Universities and has also attended many local and international conferences, workshops, dialogue and colloquium, where he presented well researched papers and facilitated some sessions.

Prof. Adekoya serves on the Editorial Board of reputable Journals. He has authored several articles and contributed to books and loose-leafs as well as co-edited many publications.

The call was made by Ambassador Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu at the Induction and Swearing-in-Ceremony of the 26th Set of Medical Graduates of Olabisi Onabanjo University to the noble medical profession.

The event which took place on Tuesday, 11th February, 2020 at the Auditorium of Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Sagamu had the Registrar, Medical Council of Nigeria, (MDCN) Dr. T. A. B. Sanusi ably represented by Dr. Henry Okonponkeye swearing in 41 Medical Graduands into the medical profession.

Ambassador Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu who was the Guest Speaker at the occasion urged medical practitioners to always look after themselves and accept that as human beings they were prone to breakdown as a result of stress factors associated to their profession.

Dr. Awolowo-Dosunmu whose lecture was entitled “Medical Practice:  Staying cautioned medical doctors to always set realistic goals for themselves and learn how to acquire specific skills for time management.  She added that “as a doctor, you must take Healthy time out for yourself each day, learn to relax, be positive and develop a sense of humour.”

The guest speaker was of the opinion that employers of medical practitioners have a key role to play in safeguarding the health of their staff by providing a supportive work environment and encouraging the use of the workplace to provide health education and health promotion activities.

She emphasized the need for employers to allow doctors influence their work environment by giving them clinical autonomy and reducing workplace stressors.

While calling on the medical community to help one another to stay well, Dr. Awolowo-Dosunmu warned doctors to be less competitive but be more cooperative and must accept that “human weaknesses are natural and occasional failures are inevitable in the profession.”  She, therefore, advised the medical community to support one another through difficult times, especially, during investigations.  She said that for a doctor to perform optimally, he should be giving achievable expectations, reasonable job descriptions and schedules.

According to her, “unhealthy doctors cannot be expected to deliver high quality healthcare to the nation.”

The Guest Speaker advised the nation’s healthcare managers to have a vision of a “healthcare system where doctors are as healthy as they wish their patients to be and where organizations create nurturing environments.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, (OACHS), Professor A. O. Olatunji who would later present the inductees to the Registrar MDCN for the swearing-in-ceremony acknowledged the fact that the medical graduates had been properly and adequately trained to practice as doctors.  He however, cautioned them, that when they start their medical practice, they should do it with high sense of responsibility, integrity and with the interest of their patients at all times.  He warned them not to expect immediate financial reward in medical practice.

“You may not be immediately adequately rewarded financially, but you can be guaranteed of light at the end of the tunnel.
“You will all succeed in whatever area of medicine you eventually choose to practice and for those of you that may not practice medicine, let the discipline, morals and integrity associated with the medical profession guide you always.”

The Provost urged them to always remember their Alma Mata by contributing to further development of the existing facilities and infrastructure.

Professor A. O. Olatunji, thereafter, congratulated the inductees and their parents for the happy occasion.

In his own address at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde who was the Chief Host at the occasion, was full of praise to God for making the day possible and for the giant strides being taken by the University to achieve its tripodal mandate of teaching, research and community service.  He congratulated the inductees for completing their studies as scheduled in spite of all odds within and outside the University environment.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that the inductees have managed to weather the storm which have resulted in their  formal induction into the medical profession.

“I felicitate with you and admonish you to be worthy ambassadors of this great University and as you go into the world, it is my hope that you will maintain the honour usually bestowed upon this great institution and keep the flag flying.

“I urge you to always remember your Alma Mata in all that you do.  We have no doubt that with the depth of training that you have received, you are bound to excel in all you may encounter out there,” said Professor Ganiyu Olatunde.

The Vice-Chancellor also advised the medical graduates that their induction into the medical profession was not the end of learning process and that whatever path they choose, as long as they practice medicine, “it is a lifelong path of dedication to the wellbeing of your patients for which you must continue to study, learn and break new grounds in your profession.”

One of the major high points of the event was the declaration of Akinyemi Olamide Sunday who won four prizes out of the 10 available as the overall best student for the 26th graduating set of doctors.

Declaring the ceremony open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, ably represented by the Provost, Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Prof. Adetola Olatunji expressed satisfaction on the success of the epoch making event which according to him signified the results of hardwork and perseverance. The Vice-Chancellor further congratulated the parents and guardians and enjoined them not to rest on their oars especially at this transitional but critical period of their wards life. He further reassured the Pharmacist inductees that the University had prepared them to meet the demands and challenges st of 21 century, as prosperous graduates.

In his address as the Special guest of Honour, the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA, who was represented at the occasion by Mr Sofoluwe Oluwatosin of the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology congratulated the graduands and the entire University Community for the successful event. He, therefore, charged the graduands to be entrepreneurial by thinking out of the box, carving a niche for themselves, and occupying the space.

In her welcome address, the Acting Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyemisi Bamiro profoundly appreciated everybody in attendance, especially, the Guests for honouring the Faculty’s invitation at the shortest notice. She therefore thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his unflinching support to the Faculty at all times while also acknowledging the sacrifices of the PCN Registrar and the Guest Lecturer. While congratulating the graduands on this j oyo u s o c ca s i o n , t h e A c t i n g D e a n admonished them to make righteousness, integrity, hardwork, and the fear of God the bedrock of their future endeavour and choices, which according to her, would advance them on their path to destiny.

Delivering an induction lecture entitled “Distruptive Innovation as a Panacea for Best Pharmaceutical Practices”, the Guest lecturer, Pharmacist (Mrs.) Bisi Bright challenged the graduands to aim high in their future undertakings by “refusing to stay among the bunch” in any area they choose in the field of pharmacy. This she said was achievable by not only being innovative but disruptively innovative. According to her, Disruptive Innovation describes changes in the way things are that seem disruptive but will eventually align into an unprecedented and positive o u t c o m e . S h e a d d e d t h a t i n professionalism, “it describes new practices and methods which deviate from the norm, for the purpose of achieving unprecedented but successful outcomes”. While highlighting the urgent need for pharmacists especially the young ones to be religious towards realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world acclaimed public health expert recommended that health professionals including pharmacists should engage in the n e w l y i d e n t i f i e d a p p ro a c h e s l i ke Multidisciplinary Collaborations, Chaordic Mechanisms of Drug Delivery and Supply Chain Transformation, Therapeutic Interventions and Clinical Pharmacy optimization, Patient centred care, Empathy and Quality Assured Cost- Outcome Analyses.

I n h i s ow n s p e e c h , t h e Re g i st ra r, Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) Pharm. N. A. E. Mohammed equally congratulated the entire University Community, parents, guardians, and the celebrants. He admonished them to be the best they could to themselves in particular and to humanity in general. This he said was achievable by acquainting themselves with the Code of Professional Ethics which prescribes the professional and moral responsibilities to the patients, pharmacists, colleagues, other health professionals, your employers and the general public, among others.

Speaking further the Registrar reassured the new entrants that Pharmacy was a noble profession with opportunities for new graduates to have great prospects of practising in different fields such as Industries, Communities, Hospitals, Administration, Academia, and other human endeavours including Information Technology, Journalism, Publishing, and Governance. He however warned that adherence to the code of ethics was indispensable in the conduct of any Pharmacist in any field of human endeavour, as the Council frowns at professional misconduct in its entirety.

A m i d s t funfair and celebration s , t h e graduands supported b y t h e i r p a r e n t s , guardians, f r i e n d s , family and loved ones w e r e n o t only seen to be in happy mood after t h e i n d u c t i o n ceremony, but shouts of ecstasy that rented the air for the celebrations within the premises of the induction ceremony lent credence to the joyful mood of the graduands having toiled day and night to be part of the memorable annual event.

The highpoints of the event was the th administration of Oaths to the 19 set of 55 OOU graduands by the PCN Registrar and the presentation of PCN Prize to Best Graduating Student, Ola-Dauda Khalidat Oluwasanmi with cumulative GPA of 4.53.

Activities slated for the occasion include the opening ceremony, lectures and interactive sessions. The programme will be rounded off with a Jumat Prayer at the Central Mosque, Main Campus on Friday, 23rd February, 2018 at 1.00 p.m. with Dr. Hakeem Akanni of the Department of Religious Studies, leading the prayer while an Interdenominational Prayer will take place on Sunday, 25th February, 2018 at the Lecture Theatre II at 10.00 a.m. Professor A.T. Oduyale, the University Chaplain will be in charge.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde is expected to declare the ceremony open while other members of the university management would also attend.

He made this exhortation during the Induction ceremony of the 24^th graduating set of doctors that were inducted on Tuesday, 7^th November, 2017.  Represented by the University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mrs. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, the Vice-Chancellor advised the graduands to always read their Hippocratic Oath in order for them not to derail from the ethics of their profession.

She added that in their advancement in the medical world, they should always bring themselves to the level of their patients in order to empathize with them.  She stressed that doctors ought to respect the independence of their patients.  She told the audience that information at the Vice-Chancellor’s disposal revealed that the University graduates in medical profession were doing very well in their calling hence the graduands should work hard to be part of the positive recognition.

She congratulated the graduands and their parents for their perseverance while in school which made them qualified for the Induction.  She further urged the graduands to reciprocate the University gestures by giving back to the University when they had successfully midwifed themselves to success and greater heights in future.

Speaking on the same vein, the Guest Speaker of the ceremony, Dr. Olusegun Akintola Adeboye said that the world was expected to be filled with competent doctors to attend to the gory of maternal death, and other related monumental health challenges. Dr. Adeboye advised the new set of doctors to uphold the 7Cs of care, concern, compassion, conscience, commitment, confidence and competence in their professional calling as they attend to the wellness and wellbeing of the people.

He added that the graduands must desire more knowledge for professional growth and crave for best practices in their day to day attendance to patients.  Dr. Adeboye  insisted that a doctor should “keep learning, be resourceful, resilient and reflective at all times”.  He further stressed that they should have a game plan for their professional advancement before marriage and parenting weigh them down.  He also advised them to  “build up a peer Group Network” by  checking on old classmates and colleagues as they chart their paths and roadmap to progress without neglecting their international exposure.

Delivering the Visitor’s address, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tunde Ipaye disclosed that the government of His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, FCA, CON had been partnering with all stakeholders in the health sector and the Federal Ministry of Health to review the curriculum of medical education in the higher institutions to make it conform with Leadership and Training.

He advised the graduands to understand themselves and their professional calling. He urged them to be socially aware of innovations in the medical world which emphasized more diagnostic medicine than clinical.  He added that they should always think out of the box to advance their profession.  Above all, he urged them to adhere to the principles of productivity, integrity, professionalism and focus on their skills during their medical practice.

In his own speech, the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. T. A. Sanusi urged the University management to upgrade the College into three faculties so as to boost the production of quality doctors that would know their onions.

He highlighted ethical issues as one of the major challenges of doctors practising in hospitals across the nation.

Dr. Sanusi later called for the centralization of the Internship Programme in the country and disclosed that efforts were ongoing by the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole and other stakeholders to ensure that the bill on this was passed by the National Assembly.  The Registrar admonished the graduands not to tarnish their reputation by deliberately or inadvertently violating the medial ethics in the course of  discharging their duties.  He added that the Council would not hesitate to punish any violator of its ethics under the guise of ignorance, therefore, urging them to always pay back In kind to their Alma mata which had produced them as doctors.

The Chief Medical Director of OOU Teaching Hospital, Professor Alfred Jayesinmi represented by Dr. Lamina promised that the Hospital was set to actualize palliative medical care as work were in progress to achieve this.  He urged the graduands to always take good care of their health to enable them perform optimally in their assignments.

The ceremony was climaxed with presentation of the inductees to the congregation; presentation of prizes to the best graduating student who happened to be Dr. Odeyemi, Joseph Olufemi who received five prizes to the amazement of the audience.
